Angie’s Notes

  • While I wouldn’t recommend using liquid smoke instead of smoking – I find the flavor very fake and overpowering
  • Should you choose to use liquid smoke, start with 1 drop, mix well and taste. Add 1 drop at a time so you don’t overpower the salad
  • Try different spices – celery, paprika, curry, or cajun
  • My salad is very basic as I don’t like many foods, but you could add hard boiled eggs, celery, or onion

Why I Love This Smoked Potato Salad

To start, smoked potato salad is a great way to use smoked potatoes. Buying a smoker was the best decision I’ve made in a long time. I bought mine used, but it had good bones but needed work. Upgrades I made include a new power cord & electric heating element. All in, it was still cheaper than buying a new smoker.

When I first turned the smoker on, I tried potatoes so I could get a feel for how the smoker works. I highly recommend starting with potatoes. Eating them uncooked won’t make you sick, they are cheaper than meat, and you can experiment easily with flavors & temperatures.

A Lighter Take On Potato Salad

You may have noticed my potato salad is really 2 ingredients & spices. My tastes have changed recently, and I no longer like all of the typical potato salad ingredients. The salad is still full of flavor though!

Since my tastes have changed, my food goals are all about making the most flavor that I can with the least amount of ingredients. I’ve included a list of additional add-ins that would be a tasty addition to this smoked potato salad.

Add-ins For Smoked Potato Salad

  • Celery (sub with lovage)
  • Hard-boiled Eggs
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Bacon

The Best Way To Mix Smoked Potato Salad

Angie’s favorite way to mix potato salad is to toss everything in a bag and gently shake it. The key word is gently – I lightly toss the bag back and forth – no aggressive hands! In order to toss, make sure you zip the bag and leave the air in it, otherwise, the bag will be flat and it won’t mix. Mixing in a bag saves a mixing bowl as well as a storage bowl.

Honestly, smoked potato salad doesn’t last long in my house, so if I can save a dish (or 2) I’m all in!
