Instructions

  • Cut off top or flaps of the box you are using.
    Box you'd like to use
Step 1: find a box you'd like to use
  • Wrap the bottom of the box.
    Wrapping Paper Of Choice
Step 5: finished wrapped box. The bottom doesn't need to be wrapped as we will be filling with materials.
  • Measure the flaps or top and cut them to fit inside the bottom of the box. Once they fit snugly in the box, wrap the flaps or top.
Step 5: when finished wrapping, you should have a box and a piece that fits inside the box.
  • Place bubble wrap or other stuffing material (newspaper), in the box and then place the wrapped flaps or top on top of the stuffing material.
Bubble wrap, newspaper, or other stuffing material
Step 6: fill the box with material - like this!
  • That's it! Your upcycled box is now ready to be filled with gifts! I'll either place crinkles or candy as the "base" of the gift, then place gifts on top.
Step 7: add your wrapped piece to the box and adjust the "height" of the filling as needed.by adding or removing filling.

Notes

  • As you receive packages, I recommend saving the packing materials – bubble wrap, crinkles, etc.
  • If you receive smaller boxes that may be good for gifting, break down the box and save
  • I keep a plastic tote in a closet where I place all my materials throughout the year. This way, whenever I need a gift, I can grab the tote and easily have everything I need

Why I Love Upcycling Boxes

If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you’ll know that I try to be a less wasteful home, included in that is upcycling boxes!

When I receive a box in the mail, I’ll decide based on the time of year and what events are coming up if I will save or recycle the box and material. I receive boxes with packing material (air bubbles) or crinkle paper, and sometimes brown paper as fillers. Those are all great materials to save for upcycling boxes.

Read my post today to learn all about upcycling.

What Is Upcycling Anyways?

Upcycling is how you reuse materials to create a new item that is worth more than the original item. To put it simply, wrapping a box you received in the mail in wrapping paper to give as a gift is upcycling! The best part about upcycling boxes is how easy it is to do!

In order to upcycle a box, you only need a few materials. Wrapping paper, tape, filler material, and of course a box. Once you have your materials, you can start wrapping the box. I find it easier to trim the paper as I go to make the box look as best as possible! Of course, the wrapping doesn’t need to be perfect, do your best!
