In the past I have written about seed packet information, and how to use it to better your garden. This week I’ll be diving into my favorite places to buy seeds!

Save this post for later as a reference when you are planning your garden.

Angie’s Top 5 Places To Purchase Seeds

Why Angie Loves Each Seed Company

  • Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds – offers a large variety of seeds – including unique seeds such as mini butternut squash, coming in around 4-5 inches! Baker Creek has low prices – the average seed packet is $4 which is a steal when you think about the uniqueness of the seed(s) you are buying. They also offer free shipping for USA orders, and if you spend $10 (which is about 2-3 seed packets) you get a free seed packet of their choice! I’ve never been disappointed with the seeds I get (or the free seeds). They also offer this amazing seed catalog every year – they offer a free version or a paid version. The paid version comes with articles, stories, etc. from what I can tell both the free and paid versions have the same seeds featured.

Inexpensive Seeds And Variety? Yes, Please!

  • Free Heirloom Seeds – the first time I ordered from this site I was very skeptical. It seemed too good to be true! I chose my seeds, sent them $10 and in a few weeks I received 15 seed packets in the mail. Free Heirloom Seeds options are changing often, and sometimes they need to catch up with orders so they won’t accept new orders. Their variety of seeds is OK compared to the other sites, but it really depends on what you are looking for specifically. I would recommend copy/paste the description from the site to a word document, so when your seeds come in, you have a description. The seed packet you receive (and the site) contains limited information, but for the price, you can’t beat it. They also offer seeds for free as well, I’m not sure how that works, but their site should tell you how to get free seeds.
  • Baker Creek Heirloom Seed - seed packet information
  • freeheirloomseeds.org seed packet information
  • Botanical Interests – offers a reward program – which is always nice! Their seed packets come with beautiful artwork of the plant and their website offers more information about the plant than Baker Creek does. Botanical Interests also shows information about the category you are viewing. For example, the kale category describes the differences between the (3) common types of culinary kale! I always learn something new when I shop Botanical Interests.

All of these seed companies offer variety and great prices!

  • Johnny Seeds – one of the main reasons I love Johnny Seeds is that they offer webinars! The webinars are informative and they also offer a “preview” of new plants they are bringing in for the next season. Their site has so much gardening information – and they offer more information about the plant than Botanical Interests offers on their product pages.
  • Seeds ‘N Such – this company offers the lowest price point (at least from what I can tell) compared to the other sites I’ve mentioned. Their average price is $3 per seed packet. Their site doesn’t offer much information about the plant itself, but if you are OK paying a little less, and putting in some research time, then this may be a place for you to check out. From time to time, they will offer 25% off if you purchase 20+ seed packets – which is an easy way to save money.

The Choice Is Yours

Wherever you choose to shop for seeds, you can’t go wrong with any of the above mentioned places. It all depends on how much information you’d like to know about what you are buying. For me, I like as much information as possible so I can ensure a successful growing season.

I have to get back to my garden tasks, but feel free to drop any comments below!
