Wine Boba
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Wine substitute any liquid
- 1 Cup Vegetable Oil
- ½ Teaspoon Agar Agar Powder
Instructions
Prep For Wine Boba
- Place 1 cup of vegetable oil in the freezer for 40 minutes.1 Cup Vegetable Oil
Prep Agar Agar
- About 20 minutes after placing oil in freezer, start prepping the agar agar. In a saucepan over medium heat, mix the wine & agar agar.1 Cup Wine, ½ Teaspoon Agar Agar Powder
- Bring mixture to boil, then remove from heat. Let cool 20 minutes.
Make Wine Boba
- Remove oil from freezer, and prepare your workspace. Fill a bowl with cold water, and place your wine mixture on the left, the oil in the middle, and the water on the right – this will act as an assembly line.
- Using a dropper, drop your wine mixture into the oil. As the wine hits the oil, it will form a ball and sink to the bottom. I recommend trying different sized drops and seeing which you prefer.
- As the boba start to form on the bottom, scoop the boba out using a slotted spoon and place into water.
- After you've used all the wine mixture and have all your boba in the water, under cold water, strain the water out using a strainer and gently strain the boba. The goal is to remove as much oil as possible.
- Use boba immediately or refrigerate to up to 3 days.

Why I Love Wine Boba
Have you ever had wine boba? Did you know you can make boba out of any liquid, including wine? Boba adds fun to any drink! I love to pair my boba with my color changing lemonade, it adds more fun to my drink. The boba itself is not chewy, but has a “shell” on it that pop a little when you chew it. That’s when you get the taste of the wine boba.
If you don’t like wine, or would prefer an alcohol-free version, any liquid will work for boba! Simply substitute your favorite drink for the wine.
How Is Wine Boba Made?
Making boba is very simple – the longest part is the prep work – waiting 40 minutes for the oil to chill. After the oil is chilled and the agar agar is mixed with the liquid, all that is left is making the boba!
When you drop the agar agar into the oil, a reaction occurs and forms a shell around your liquid. Since we use chilled oil, the shell chills but the inside stays liquid – pretty neat.
